    Summary

    Somatostatin administration was found to reduce serum gastrin levels in dyspeptic subjects. This effect on gastrin release was observed for up to 60 minutes post-injection.

    Background:

    • Dyspepsia is a common gastrointestinal disorder.
    • Gastrin plays a key role in gastric acid secretion and mucosal growth.
    • Understanding the regulation of gastrin is crucial for managing digestive diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of somatostatin on serum gastrin levels in patients with dyspepsia.
    • To evaluate the impact of somatostatin on gastric acid secretion.

    Main Methods:

    • 12 dyspeptic subjects participated in the study.
    • Serum gastrin levels were measured at various time points after somatostatin (250 mcg IV bolus) or histamine (0.5 mg IM) injection.
    • Gastric acid secretion was also determined.

    Main Results:

    • Somatostatin significantly reduced serum gastrin release starting 30 minutes after administration, with effects lasting up to 60 minutes.
    • Serum gastrin levels returned to baseline by 75 minutes post-somatostatin injection.

    • Somatostatin's effect on gastrin is distinct from its action when combined with histamine stimulation.
