    Summary

Cryptorchidism, or undescended testicles, significantly increases testicular cancer risk. This study reviews cases of testicular seminoma in patients with a history of cryptorchidism, highlighting the need for vigilant follow-up.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Urology

    Background:

    • Cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) is a known risk factor for testicular cancer.
    • Malignant neoplasms in undescended testes occur at a significantly higher rate compared to normally descended testes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review cases of testicular seminoma in patients with a history of cryptorchidism.
    • To discuss etiologic factors contributing to tumorigenesis in this patient group.
    • To emphasize the importance of regular follow-up for patients with cryptorchidism.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 74 patients diagnosed with testicular seminoma.
    • Identification and detailed analysis of six cases with a history of cryptorchidism.
    • Comprehensive literature review on cryptorchidism and testicular cancer.

    Main Results:

    • Six out of 74 testicular seminoma patients (approximately 8.1%) had a history of cryptorchidism.
    • The probability of malignancy in undescended testes is substantially elevated (20-48 times greater).

    Conclusions:

    • Cryptorchidism is a critical factor in testicular carcinogenesis.
    • Understanding etiologic factors is crucial for managing patients with undescended testes.
    • Periodic follow-up is essential for early detection and management of testicular tumors in individuals with a history of cryptorchidism.
