    Summary

    Amoxapine, a medication for depression, may cause seizures in some patients. Healthcare providers should exercise caution when prescribing amoxapine to individuals with a history of seizure disorders.

    Background:

    • Two patients experienced seizures while receiving therapeutic doses of amoxapine.
    • The seizures occurred despite adherence to prescribed medication dosages.
    • No other potential causes for the seizures were immediately apparent.

    • Structural similarities exist between amoxapine and neuroleptic drugs.
    • These structural similarities may contribute to amoxapine-induced seizures.
    • Amoxapine's potential to lower seizure threshold is suggested.

    Implications:

    • Prescribing amoxapine requires careful consideration of patient history.
    • Patients with a pre-existing seizure disorder may be at increased risk.
    • Further research into amoxapine's epileptogenic potential is warranted.
