Does a booklet on breast self-examination improve subsequent detection rates?

J Turner, R Blaney, D Roy

    Lancet (London, England)
    |August 11, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Breast self-examination (BSE) booklets increased early-stage breast cancer detection. While overall abnormalities were similar, the intervention group showed more early-stage cancers and smaller tumor sizes, suggesting improved outcomes.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Preventive Medicine
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Breast cancer remains a significant health concern for women.
    • Early detection is crucial for improving patient outcomes and survival rates.
    • Breast self-examination (BSE) is a widely promoted screening method.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of educational booklets on breast self-examination (BSE) in early breast cancer detection.
    • To assess the impact of BSE intervention on cancer staging, tumor size, and detection sites.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized controlled trial involving 28,788 women aged 40-74.
    • Half the participants received BSE booklets at baseline and 1-year follow-up.
    • A 2-year follow-up period to monitor breast abnormalities and cancer diagnoses.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in the overall frequency of breast abnormalities between groups (0.83%).
    • Significantly higher detection of early-stage malignant breast cancers (stages TX, T0, T1a) in the intervention group (53.6% vs. 24.3%).
    • Smaller average tumor size (24.0 mm vs. 32.6 mm) and reduced involvement of specific sites (left nipple, left inner/upper quadrant) in the intervention group.

    Conclusions:

    • Regular BSE education can lead to earlier detection of breast cancer.
    • BSE intervention is associated with detecting smaller tumors and less advanced disease.
    • Further research is warranted to optimize BSE education strategies for maximum impact.
