    Background:

    • Sulphasalazine is a common treatment for ulcerative colitis.
    • Concerns exist regarding its potential to cause folate deficiency.
    • The clinical significance of sulphasalazine's effect on folic acid absorption remains debated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the clinical significance of sulphasalazine's inhibition of folic acid absorption.
    • To determine if sulphasalazine causes a significant lowering of folate levels in patients with ulcerative colitis.

    Main Methods:

    • A random sample of ulcerative colitis patients undergoing sulphasalazine treatment was studied.
    • Folate levels were assessed in the patient cohort.

    Main Results:

    • No statistically significant reduction in folate levels was observed in patients receiving sulphasalazine.
    • The study did not find evidence to support a clinically significant impact on folate status.

    Conclusions:

    • Sulphasalazine does not appear to cause a significant lowering of folate levels in patients with ulcerative colitis.
