Sensorineural hearing loss associated with ulcerative colitis. A case report.

R S Weber, H A Jenkins, N J Coker

Archives of Otolaryngology (Chicago, Ill. : 1960)

    Summary

Autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss, a condition linked to systemic autoimmune diseases, can directly affect the inner ear. Corticosteroid therapy proved effective for a patient with ulcerative colitis experiencing progressive hearing loss.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Immunology
    • Gastroenterology

    Background:

    • Autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss (ASNHL) was identified in 1979.
    • ASNHL can arise from systemic autoimmune conditions or direct autoimmune attacks on the inner ear (labyrinth).

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with active ulcerative colitis and concurrent progressive sensorineural hearing loss.
    • The hearing loss was sensorineural, indicating damage to the auditory nerve or inner ear.

    Findings:

    • The patient's progressive hearing loss showed a positive response to corticosteroid treatment.
    • This suggests a potential autoimmune etiology for the hearing loss in the context of ulcerative colitis.

    Implications:

    • Corticosteroids may be a viable treatment for sensorineural hearing loss associated with autoimmune diseases like ulcerative colitis.
