The value of laparoscopy in localising the impalpable undescended testis

The impalpable undescended testis poses a diagnostic and management problem for the surgeon. This report describes the technique of laparoscopy in localising such a testis in 38 patients (45 testes). The testis was absent or atrophic in 11 patients (24.5%); it was in the inguinal canal in 7 cases (15.5%) and within the abdomen in 27 (60%). A distinction is made between the truly abdominal testis and one which lies close to the internal ring (just canalicular). The influence of the endoscopic findings on the operative approach is detailed.
