    Background:

    • Biculline is a known antagonist of GABA-A receptors.
    • Previous studies indicate biculline can induce convulsant effects on neuronal activity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of biculline on visually evoked and spontaneous neuronal activity in the cat motor cortex.
    • To analyze the impact of biculline on slow-wave activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Microgram quantities of biculline were applied to the precruciate gyrus (motor cortex) of cats.
    • Single-unit and slow-wave activity were recorded and analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Biculline increased both visually evoked and spontaneous single-unit activity.
    • A surface-negative slow-wave response was significantly enhanced by biculline.
    • This enhanced slow-wave component correlated with a marked suppression of spontaneous single-unit activity.

    • Biculline also potentiates a process associated with enhanced neural inhibition.
    • The findings suggest a dual role for biculline in modulating cortical activity, involving both excitation and potentiation of inhibition.
