Binaural interaction in human auditory evoked potentials.

R A Dobie, S J Norton

    Summary

Binaural interaction (BI) in auditory evoked potentials was observed in most subjects. While BI was present in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BSEP), middle-latency auditory evoked potentials (middle AEP) showed significant differences.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Auditory Neuroscience
    • Evoked Potentials

    Background:

    • Binaural interaction (BI) is defined as deviations from additive neural activity predictions.
    • Previous studies in guinea pigs showed strong BI in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BSEP).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate binaural interaction in human brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BSEP) and middle-latency auditory evoked potentials (middle AEP).
    • To compare binaural responses with predicted binaural responses based on monaural inputs.

    Main Methods:

    • Recorded BSEP and middle AEP in 16 normal young adults using binaural and monaural click stimuli.
    • Calculated BI by subtracting predicted binaural responses from actual binaural responses.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • BI was observed in the majority of subjects' BSEP, but group means showed no significant differences.
    • Middle AEP peak Pa amplitude was smaller in binaural responses compared to predicted binaural responses.
    • Four subjects exhibited predominantly myogenic middle AEP with a reverse interaction pattern.

    Conclusions:

    • Binaural interaction in human BSEP is present but not significant at the group level.
    • Middle AEP reveals significant binaural interaction, with peak Pa amplitude reduction.
    • Myogenic potentials can influence middle AEP and show reversed binaural interaction.
