Catamenial pneumothorax.

    Summary

    Catamenial pneumothorax, a rare condition causing lung collapse, can recur. Anovulatory hormone treatment effectively prevented recurrence in a patient with multiple episodes of right-sided pneumothorax.

    Background:

    • Catamenial pneumothorax is a rare form of spontaneous pneumothorax linked to the menstrual cycle.
    • It often presents with recurrent episodes, posing significant clinical challenges.
    • Diagnosis and management require a multidisciplinary approach.

    Observation:

    • A 46-year-old woman experienced nine recurrences of right-sided catamenial pneumothorax.
    • Previous treatments had limited success in preventing further episodes.

    Findings:

    • Anovulatory hormone therapy was initiated to manage the recurrent pneumothorax.
    • During a 6-month period of anovulatory hormone treatment, no recurrence of pneumothorax was observed.

    Implications:

    • Anovulatory hormone treatment appears to be a promising therapeutic option for managing recurrent catamenial pneumothorax.
    • This case highlights the potential efficacy of hormonal suppression in preventing cyclical lung collapse.
    • Further research is warranted to establish optimal treatment protocols and long-term outcomes.
