    Background:

    • Aggressiveness in XYY males is a complex issue with potential neurochemical underpinnings.
    • Previous research suggests alterations in neurotransmitter systems may be involved in aggressive behavior.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate central serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA) turnover in aggressive XYY patients.
    • To evaluate the therapeutic potential of L-5-hydroxytryptophan (L-5-HTP) in managing aggressiveness in XYY individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amine metabolites were measured in six XYY patients before and after a probenecid test.
    • Five patients received L-5-HTP supplementation, a precursor to serotonin.
    • Clinical status was assessed and compared to previous neuroleptic treatment outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • A significant decrease in central serotonin turnover was observed in aggressive XYY patients.
    • Dopamine turnover remained unchanged in these patients.
    • L-5-HTP treatment led to a clinical status comparable to conventional neuroleptic treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • Reduced central serotonin turnover is implicated in the aggressive behavior of XYY males.
    • Serotonin precursor supplementation (L-5-HTP) offers a potential therapeutic strategy for managing aggressiveness in this population.
    • These findings highlight the role of the serotonin system in the neurobiology of aggression.
