    Summary

    Interferon (IF) significantly enhances antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) mediated by K cells, a type of lymphocyte. This finding supports the idea that K cells and natural killer (NK) cells may be the same, but also suggests ADCC effectors without NK activity might exist.

    Background:

    • Interferon (IF) is known to boost natural killer (NK) cell activity.
    • Previous studies have yielded conflicting results regarding IF's effect on antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of interferon (IF) on human antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC).
    • To clarify the relationship between K cells, which mediate ADCC, and NK cells.

    Main Methods:

    • Testing the impact of purified human leukocyte IF on ADCC.
    • Assessing IF's effect on ADCC against NK-resistant target cells.
    • Evaluating IF's influence on ADCC in leukaemic cells from a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) lacking NK activity.
