Background:

Staphylococcus aureus exhibits antigen variation, impacting disease understanding and control.
Previous studies have not fully elucidated the mechanisms behind this variation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the mechanisms driving antigen variation in Staphylococcus aureus.
To demonstrate the role of genetic mutation and selective outgrowth in this process.

Successive daily subculturing of Staphylococcus aureus.
Analysis of antigen expression in resulting subcultures.

Discontinuous variation, indicative of genetic mutation, was observed.
Selective outgrowth of antigen variants was evident in repeated transfers.
Subcultures consistently contained a mix of original (17 or 13) and variant (1 or 3) antigens.

Antigen variation in Staphylococcus aureus is a result of genetic mutation and selective outgrowth.
