    Summary

    Polymorphonuclear leukocyte chemotaxis is not elevated in dermatitis herpetiformis patients. This suggests skin inflammation in dermatitis herpetiformis is not caused by hyper-responsive white blood cells.

    Background:

    • Dermatitis herpetiformis is characterized by skin inflammation with neutrophil infiltration.
    • The precise mechanisms driving neutrophil accumulation in dermatitis herpetiformis remain incompletely understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) chemotaxis in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis.
    • To determine if increased PMN responsiveness contributes to skin inflammation in this condition.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) chemotaxis in 15 dermatitis herpetiformis patients.
    • Compared PMN chemotaxis to that of 15 healthy controls.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) chemotaxis was observed between dermatitis herpetiformis patients and healthy controls.
    • This indicates that PMN responsiveness to chemotactic factors is not elevated in dermatitis herpetiformis.

    Conclusions:

    • The accumulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) in the skin of dermatitis herpetiformis patients is not attributable to an increased intrinsic responsiveness of these cells.
    • Findings suggest that factors other than PMN hyper-responsiveness may be responsible for neutrophil recruitment in dermatitis herpetiformis.
