    Summary

This study developed and validated the Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment (EDPA) for assessing prehensile development in children. The EDPA demonstrated high reliability and is useful for creating educational plans for children with special needs.

    Area of Science:

    • Occupational Therapy
    • Developmental Pediatrics
    • Child Psychology

    Background:

    • Prehensile development is crucial for functional independence in children.
    • Existing assessments may lack comprehensive norms or validated reliability.
    • Standardized tools are needed for accurate developmental screening.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To establish norms for reflexive and voluntary prehensile development.
    • To revise and clinically validate the Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment (EDPA).
    • To assess the interrater reliability of the EDPA.

    Main Methods:

    • Phase One: Extensive literature search for prehensile development norms.
    • Phase Two: Clinical application and revision of the EDPA.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Phase Three: Interrater reliability testing and item analysis of the EDPA.
  • Main Results:

    • Compiled norms for prehensile development were established.
    • The EDPA was revised based on clinical use.
    • Highly significant intraclass correlations confirmed EDPA's interrater reliability.
    • Analysis identified items for further refinement.

    Conclusions:

    • The Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment (EDPA) is a reliable tool for evaluating prehensile skills.
    • The EDPA can inform the development of Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) under Federal Law 94-142.
    • Further revisions will enhance the EDPA's utility in clinical and educational settings.
