    Summary

Scanning electron microscopy revealed two types of red cell aggregates after dextran injection. Rheopolyglucin effectively disaggregated both dextran-induced red cell aggregate types.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Hematology
    • Microscopy

    Background:

    • Dextran administration can induce red blood cell aggregation in vivo.
    • Understanding the morphology of these aggregates is crucial for evaluating hemorheological effects.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the morphological features of red cell aggregates induced by dextran using scanning electron microscopy.
    • To assess the efficacy of rheopolyglucin in disaggregating these dextran-induced red cell aggregates.

    Main Methods:

    • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to visualize red blood cell morphology.
    • Intravascular injection of dextran (molecular weight 500,000) was used to induce aggregation.
    • Rheopolyglucin was administered to evaluate disaggregation effects.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Two distinct types of red cell aggregates were identified.
    • Type 1 aggregates showed red cells without significant morphological changes.
    • Type 2 aggregates exhibited surface wrinkling and increased contact areas between red cells.

    Conclusions:

    • Dextran induces distinct morphological types of red cell aggregation.
    • Rheopolyglucin demonstrates effectiveness in disaggregating both observed types of dextran-induced red cell aggregates.
    • These findings contribute to understanding dextran-induced hemorheological changes and potential therapeutic interventions.
