    Summary

    Ocular motor involvement, though rare in post-infective polyneuropathy, was studied in 11 patients. Most patients fully recovered, with minimal residual effects on eye movements, suggesting Guillain-Barre syndrome variants.

    Background:

    • Ocular motor involvement is an infrequent complication of post-infective polyneuropathy.
    • This study focuses on patients where ophthalmoplegia was a significant clinical feature.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To detail the clinical course and recovery patterns of ophthalmoplegia in patients with post-infective polyneuropathy.
    • To investigate residual ocular motor function following recovery.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective case series analysis of 11 patients with ocular motor involvement.
    • Clinical follow-up examinations up to 6 years.
    • Saccadic eye movement studies in a subset of patients.

    Main Results:

    • Eleven patients presented with significant ocular motor involvement.
    • Ten out of eleven patients showed no residual ocular motor impairment at follow-up.
    • Saccadic eye movement studies revealed mild abnormalities in 4 of 6 patients, including reduced velocities and prolonged reaction times.

    • The studied cases represent variants of the classical Guillain-Barre syndrome.
    • Complete recovery of ocular motor function is common, though subtle saccadic abnormalities may persist.
    • Ophthalmoplegia, while uncommon, is an important feature to recognize in certain polyneuropathy presentations.
