    Background:

    • Chronic periodontitis involves complex inflammatory processes in the gingival tissues.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and activation of monocytes, macrophages, T-cells, and plasma cells in human chronic periodontitis.
    • To elucidate the roles of these immune cells in the pathogenesis of periodontitis.

    Main Methods:

    • Biopsies and blood samples from 15 patients with advanced periodontal disease were analyzed.
    • Histochemical staining for nonspecific esterase and acid phosphatase was performed on gingival tissues and blood smears.
    • Monocyte and macrophage activation was assessed by enzyme activity.

    • Activated macrophages, identified by acid phosphatase and nonspecific esterase activity, were abundant in various gingival tissue compartments and blood vessels.

    • The findings highlight the dynamic nature of immune cell involvement in periodontal disease progression.
