    Summary

This study introduces a new quantitative method for classifying ventricular ectopic beats using QRS complex analysis. The developed classification accurately categorizes these cardiac events into three distinct groups.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Ventricular ectopic beats are common cardiac arrhythmias.
    • Existing classification methods for ventricular ectopic beats have limitations.
    • A quantitative approach to classifying these beats is needed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a novel classification system for ventricular ectopic beats.
    • To utilize QRS complex vector analysis for improved categorization.
    • To establish a quantitative and accurate method for grouping these arrhythmias.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of frontal and precordial QRS vectors from 71 patient ECGs.
    • Data transformation from planar to spherical coordinates for angular data.
    • Application of multivariate statistical methods and cluster analysis.
    • Development of a classification function for assigning ectopies.

    Main Results:

    • Spherical coordinate analysis identified three distinct groups of ventricular ectopic beats.
    • Planar coordinate analysis initially suggested at least four groups.
    • The developed classification function achieved 97.2% accuracy in case assignments.
    • A significant quantitative method for defining ventricular ectopic beat groups was established.

    Conclusions:

    • A new, quantitative classification of ventricular ectopic beats based on QRS vectors has been developed.
    • The use of spherical coordinates and multivariate statistics provides a robust method for grouping these arrhythmias.
    • This classification system offers improved accuracy and definition for ventricular ectopic beats.
