    Summary

    Human T lymphoblastoid cells produce interferon (IFN) when induced by Sendai virus. This T-IFN is antigenically identical to human interferon-beta (Hu IFN-beta), not Hu IFN-alpha.

    Context:

    • Human T lymphoblastoid cells (RPMI 8402) were investigated for interferon production.
    • Sendai virus was used as an inducer for interferon synthesis.

    Purpose:

    • To characterize the type of interferon produced by RPMI 8402 cells upon Sendai virus induction.
    • To investigate the priming effect of different interferon types on T-IFN production.
    • To determine the antigenic properties of the induced interferon.

    Summary:

    • RPMI 8402 cells, when induced by Sendai virus, produce interferon (T-IFN).
    • Pretreatment with human leukocyte interferon-alpha (Hu IFN-alpha) showed a priming effect, but pretreatment with T-IFN did not.
    • Superinduction by UV irradiation or antimetabolites was not observed.
    • Antigenic analysis revealed that T-IFN is neutralized by anti-Hu IFN-beta serum but not by anti-Hu IFN-alpha serum, confirming its identity with Hu IFN-beta.

    • This study confirms that the interferon produced by RPMI 8402 cells is antigenically identical to human interferon-beta (Hu IFN-beta).
