    Summary

    EEG operant conditioning, a technique to control brain activity, reduced seizure frequency and severity in some patients with difficult-to-treat epilepsy. This method shows promise for managing seizure disorders.

    Background:

    • Standard anticonvulsant medications are often insufficient for controlling seizures in some epilepsy patients.
    • Operant conditioning offers a potential non-pharmacological approach to modulate brain activity.

    Observation:

    • Five patients with refractory epilepsy underwent electroencephalogram (EEG) operant conditioning.
    • The conditioning protocol reinforced low-voltage fast activity and suppressed frequencies below 10 Hz.

    Findings:

    • Two patients experienced a decrease in seizure frequency.
    • Two patients showed an attenuation in seizure severity.
    • One patient receiving only scalp electromyogram (EMG) suppression showed no change.
