    Background:

    • Previous research indicated lithium medication does not affect flash visual evoked potentials (VEP).
    • A hypothesis proposed that lithium might influence pattern reversal VEPs differently.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of lithium medication on pattern visual evoked potentials (VEP).
    • To compare VEP changes in patients undergoing lithium treatment with age- and sex-matched controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Pattern evoked potentials (VEP) were measured in seven patients before, and 1 and 5 weeks after commencing lithium medication.
    • VEP was assessed using a 42-inch check size with fractional pattern displacements.
    • Seven age- and sex-matched normal subjects served as controls, tested twice over a 5-week interval.
