    Background:

    • A new human cell surface antigen, designated Hu Ly-m5, was detected using a murine monoclonal antibody (E4.3).
    • Initial observations suggested similarity to Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) distribution, leading to confusion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the novel Hu Ly-m5 antigen.
    • To determine its relationship with HLA antigens.

    • No involvement of Hu Ly-m5 in cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses to influenza virus-infected cells was observed.

    • Hu Ly-m5 is a distinct molecular entity from HLA antigens.
    • The physical association and differing molecular weights suggest Hu Ly-m5 is not an HLA molecule.
    • Based on its properties, Hu Ly-m5 is hypothesized to be a viral-encoded protein.
