    Summary

    Palliative surgery, including total and partial gastrectomy, offers symptom relief for advanced gastric cancer patients. This approach can improve quality of life and food intake in many cases.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of palliative gastrectomy in managing advanced gastric cancer.
    • To assess survival outcomes and symptom palliation following palliative surgical interventions.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 51 patients undergoing palliative procedures for stage IV gastric cancer.
    • Classification of palliative resection based on residual disease or positive margins.
    • Comparison of outcomes between gastrectomy and gastroenterostomy.

    Main Results:

    • Twenty-six patients underwent palliative resection (14 total, 12 partial gastrectomies).
    • Mean survival was 9.5 months; 50% achieved good palliation.
    • Gastroenterostomy yielded poor results compared to gastrectomy.

    • Palliative total and partial gastrectomy are viable options for symptom control in advanced gastric cancer.
    • Gastric resection can lead to significant symptomatic relief and improved quality of life.
