    Summary

    Beta-2-microglobulin (BMG) levels are elevated in patients with choriocarcinoma, especially with high human chorionic gonadotrophin. This suggests BMG and HLA antigen expression on trophoblastic cells or increased maternal immunocyte production.

    Background:

    • Beta-2-microglobulin (BMG) is a component of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class I molecules, also known as Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA).
    • BMG is present on the surface of most nucleated cells and plays a role in immune regulation.
    • Elevated BMG levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) can indicate various pathological conditions, including malignancies and inflammatory processes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate Beta-2-microglobulin (BMG) levels in patients with choriocarcinoma and hydatidiform mole.
    • To explore the correlation between BMG concentrations and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) levels in gestational trophoblastic diseases.
    • To assess the potential of BMG as a biomarker in choriocarcinoma, considering its association with HLA antigens.

    • Alternatively, elevated maternal immunocyte production of BMG could contribute to the observed serum levels.
    • BMG warrants further investigation as a potential biomarker in the management of choriocarcinoma, particularly in relation to hCG levels.
