Ectopic secretion of calcitonin as a tumor marker (review)

The significance of the hormone calcitonin, ectopically produced, is evaluated as a tumour marker. Since 40 percent of an unselected sample of tumours is hypercalcitoninaemic, calcitonin may be useful as a tumour marker, though absence of specificity limits its diagnostic value.
