    Summary

    Subcortical left hemisphere lesions can cause aphasia, a language disorder. This study identified two types: atypical non-fluent aphasia linked to anterior lesions and mild fluent aphasia associated with posterior lesions.

    Background:

    Observation:

    • Two clinical studies evaluated patients with CT-confirmed subcortical lesions in the left hemisphere.
    • Aphasia was identified in 2/6 patients in Study 1 and 4/6 patients in Study 2.

    Findings:

    • Subcortical lesions in the left hemisphere can lead to aphasia.
    • Two types of aphasia were observed: atypical non-fluent aphasia (anterior lesions) and mild fluent aphasia (posterior lesions).

    Implications:

    • These findings highlight the contribution of subcortical structures to language processing.
