    Summary

    Myometrial contractility is not suppressed in missed abortions. Sweeping fetal membranes with saline solution induced abortion in most cases, challenging previous assumptions about uterine function.

    Background:

    • Missed abortion is often characterized by the presumed suppression of myometrial contractility.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of myometrial contractility in missed abortion.
    • To determine if uterine contractility is diminished in cases of missed abortion.

    • A simple procedure involving sweeping of the fetal membranes with physiologic saline solution was performed.
    • The study compared outcomes in women with missed abortion versus those undergoing therapeutic abortion.

    • Induction of abortion occurred within 24 hours in 10 out of 12 women with missed abortion following the procedure.
    • The same procedure did not provoke abortion in any of the 10 women admitted for therapeutic abortion.
