    Background:

    • Cellular activity and synthesis processes after death are not fully understood.
    • Investigating postmortem cellular functions can provide insights into tissue viability and degradation timelines.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine if DNA and RNA synthesis can be detected in human tissues at various postmortem intervals.
    • To identify specific tissues exhibiting postmortem synthesis and assess the duration of this activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Tissue specimens from two cadavers were collected at intervals up to 32 hours postmortem.
    • Tissues were incubated with radiolabeled precursors (3H-thymidine for DNA, 3H-cytidine for RNA) for 1 hour.
    • Autoradiography or similar methods were used to detect and quantify labeled cells indicating synthesis.

    Main Results:

    • DNA and RNA synthesis was observed in skin tissue and bone marrow up to 32 hours postmortem.
    • Cytidine incorporation (RNA synthesis) showed a progressive decrease over the postmortem interval.
    • DNA synthesis was noted in testicular cells (spermatogonia), and low-grade RNA synthesis in bowel epithelial cells up to 2.5 hours postmortem.
    • No supravital phenomena were detected in splenic tissues.

    Conclusions:

    • Cellular synthesis of DNA and RNA can persist in certain human tissues for extended periods postmortem.
    • The rate of RNA synthesis decreases over the postmortem interval.
    • These findings contribute to understanding cellular viability and degradation in forensic contexts.
