    Summary

    Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) bones may appear normal despite fractures. Slender bones and normal metacarpal cortex thickness suggest osteoporosis is not always inevitable in OI patients.

    Background:

    • Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is frequently misclassified as osteoporosis.
    • Radiological assessment of OI bones can be complex, especially in non-neonatal fractures.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the radiological characteristics of bones in adults with osteogenesis imperfecta.
    • To determine if osteoporosis is an inherent feature of all OI cases.

    Main Methods:

    • Radiological examination of 24 adult patients diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta.
    • Assessment of metacarpal cortex thickness and bone slenderness.

    Main Results:

    • Bones without fractures in OI patients may appear radiologically normal.
    • Metacarpal cortex thickness was found to be normal in the studied group.
    • Adults with OI often exhibit slender bones, not necessarily indicative of osteoporosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Osteoporosis is not an inevitable consequence in all osteogenesis imperfecta cases.
    • Observed radiological abnormalities may stem from prior fractures and their management rather than inherent bone fragility alone.
