    Purpose of the Study:

    • To establish a model of protein deficiency in aged rats.
    • To investigate the biochemical effects of varying casein (protein) intake on liver composition and RNA synthesis in aged rats.
    • To compare the effects of protein deficiency in aged rats with those observed in young adult rats.

    Main Methods:

    • Nineteen-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets containing 25% (control), 5%, or 3.5% casein.
    • Liver protein and RNA content were measured.
    • Incorporation of [14C]orotic acid into liver nuclear RNA was assessed.

    • The 3.5% casein diet significantly reduced liver protein and RNA content compared to controls.
