Pancreatic tissue in teratoma.

    Summary

    This study found pancreatic tissue in 17 teratomas, showing histological and functional similarities to normal pancreatic tissue. These pancreatic teratomas occurred in various locations, including the mediastinum and sacrococcygeal region.

    Background:

    • Teratomas are germ cell tumors containing diverse tissue types.
    • Pancreatic tissue within teratomas is a rare occurrence.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the characteristics of teratomas containing pancreatic tissue.
    • To assess the histological and functional aspects of pancreatic tissue within teratomas.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 469 surgical cases over ten years.
    • Histopathological examination of teratoma tissues.
    • Analysis of biochemical markers in fistulous discharge.

    Main Results:

    • Seventeen teratomas (3.6%) contained well-differentiated pancreatic tissue.
    • Locations included anterior mediastinum (11), sacrococcygeal (5), and retroperitoneal (1).
    • Islets of Langerhans and exocrine components were common; mild hypoglycemia and elevated amylase were noted in specific cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Pancreatic tissue in teratomas exhibits histological and functional similarities to normal pancreatic tissue.
    • These findings highlight the potential for teratomas to harbor functional endocrine and exocrine pancreatic tissue.
