    Summary

    Retinal neovascularization, a rare complication of ocular toxoplasmosis, can cause vitreous hemorrhage. Treating ischemic areas with photocoagulation stopped hemorrhage and neovascularization in most patients.

    Background:

    • Ocular toxoplasmosis can lead to vision-threatening complications.
    • Retinal neovascularization is a rare but serious sequela of ocular toxoplasmosis.
    • Vitreous hemorrhage can result from retinal neovascularization in toxoplasmosis patients.

    Observation:

    • Three female patients presented with inactive toxoplasmosis scars.
    • Scars were associated with retinal arteriole/venule occlusion, capillary nonperfusion, and adjacent neovascularization.
    • Patient ages ranged from 19 to 70 years.

    Findings:

    • Photocoagulation of ischemic areas successfully halted hemorrhage and resolved neovascularization in two patients.
    • In one patient, spontaneous avulsion of the neovascular frond from the supplying arteriole occurred without intervention.
    • These findings suggest a link between vascular occlusion in toxoplasmosis scars and subsequent neovascularization.

    Implications:

    • Photocoagulation is an effective treatment for retinal neovascularization secondary to ocular toxoplasmosis.
    • Understanding the pathogenesis of neovascularization in toxoplasmosis can guide therapeutic strategies.
    • Early detection and management of these vascular complications may prevent severe vision loss.
