Background:

Fetoscopy is an invasive endoscopic procedure used in fetal medicine.
Its application and outcomes in non-human primate models require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of fetoscopy in a primate model.
To assess the success rates of specific fetoscopic interventions and associated complications.

Main Methods:

Twenty-four fetoscopy procedures were performed on 22 non-human primates (Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, Erythrocebus patas) at various gestational ages.
Procedures included fetoscope insertion, amniotic fluid exchange, and fetal blood sampling.
Complications and pregnancy outcomes were monitored.

Main Results:

Fetoscope insertion was successful without ultrasound guidance in 14/24 procedures.
Amniotic fluid exchange succeeded in 8/13 attempts, and fetal blood sampling in 4/9 attempts.
Nine monkeys aborted post-procedure; maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein levels did not predict abortion.

Conclusions:

Fetoscopy in this primate model presented technical challenges and a notable rate of complications, including abortion.
Further refinement of techniques may be necessary for improved outcomes in primate fetoscopy research.
