    Summary

    Suppressor cell activity (SCA) in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients did not differ based on remaining beta-cell function. SCA levels several years post-diagnosis are not linked to beta-cell function in IDDM.

    Background:

    • Immunological mechanisms are implicated in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) pathogenesis.
    • Suppressor cell activity (SCA) is often reduced at the time of IDDM diagnosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if preserved beta-cell function influences SCA in long-standing IDDM patients.
    • To compare SCA between IDDM patients with and without residual beta-cell function.

    Main Methods:

    • Examined 16 patients without and 12 with beta-cell function after ~9 years of IDDM.
    • Assessed lymphocyte suppressive effect after concanavalin A stimulation and inactivation.
    • Measured SCA by its ability to inhibit 3H-thymidine incorporation in normal lymphocytes.

    • No significant difference in SCA was observed between IDDM patients with and without beta-cell function.
    • One patient group exhibited SCA significantly different from normal controls.
    • A correlation between SCA and insulin dosage was found in patients without beta-cell function.

    Conclusions:

    • Current SCA levels several years after IDDM diagnosis are not associated with the patient's beta-cell function.
    • These findings suggest that immune cell function may not be directly linked to beta-cell status in established IDDM.
