    Summary

    Optic nerve sheath meningiomas, once rare, are now frequently diagnosed. Irradiation therapy shows promise for visual improvement and tumor regression in these cases.

    Background:

    • Optic nerve sheath meningiomas (ONSM) were once considered rare but are now frequently identified due to advances in neuroimaging.
    • Surgical intervention for ONSM, while once favored, carries a significant risk of vision loss.

    • This report details five patients with primary ONSM who underwent irradiation therapy.
    • The study focused on ONSM located in the posterior orbital and intracanalicular regions of the optic nerve.

    Findings:

    • Irradiation therapy resulted in documented improvements in visual acuity.
    • Stabilization or expansion of the visual field was observed.
    • Tumor size decreased, with some cases showing complete regression of optociliary veins.

    Implications:

    • Irradiation therapy offers a viable option for visual palliation in select ONSM cases.
