    Background:

    • Acute respiratory failure involves pulmonary vascular injury and increased endothelial permeability.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate factor VIII levels and activity in patients with acute respiratory failure.
    • To determine if factor VIII:antigen can serve as a biomarker for pulmonary endothelial injury.
    • To assess changes in factor VIII:antigen patterns during recovery from acute respiratory failure.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied factor VIII:antigen, factor VIII:von Willebrand's factor, and factor VIII:coagulant activity in 100 acute respiratory failure patients, 29 critically ill patients, and 60 normal subjects.
    • Utilized electrophoresis to analyze electrophoretic patterns of factor VIII:antigen components.
    • Compared factor VIII levels and patterns between patient groups and healthy controls.
