[Localization on the integument and alcali resistance ].

R Kurz, B Ummenhofer

    Zeitschrift Fur Hautkrankheiten
    |July 15, 1982

    Summary

The alkali resistance of skin varies significantly across different body areas, with the back of the hand being the most resistant. Applying alkali solutions using a dropper or piston pipette yielded comparable results.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Skin Physiology

    Context:

    • The alkali resistance test is crucial for assessing skin barrier function.
    • Understanding regional variations in skin resistance is vital for dermatological applications.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate potential differences in alkali resistance across various integumental areas.
    • To compare the efficacy of dropper versus piston pipette methods for alkali solution application.

    Summary:

    • The Burckhardt-Locher alkali resistance test was conducted on 49 individuals without dermatoses.
    • Significant differences in alkali resistance were observed between the back of the hand, forearm, and shoulder.
    • No significant differences were found between the dropper and piston pipette application methods.

    Impact:

    • Provides valuable data on regional skin barrier properties.
    • Informs standardized protocols for skin testing and dermatological assessments.
    • Highlights the importance of site selection in alkali resistance testing.
