    Area of Science:

    • Rehabilitation Medicine
    • Pain Management
    • Occupational Health

    Background:

    • Chronic low back pain (CLBP) poses significant challenges to patient function and employment.
    • Multidisciplinary approaches are often necessary for effective CLBP management.
    • Long-term outcomes of comprehensive CLBP rehabilitation programs require thorough evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the 6-month and 12-month post-discharge outcomes of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for CLBP patients.
    • To identify factors influencing successful rehabilitation and return to work.
    • To compare outcomes based on program adherence.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 78 CLBP patients (42 men, 36 women) underwent a multimodal rehabilitation program.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The program included biofeedback, self-control techniques, medication self-regulation, physical therapy, vocational services, and education.
  • Outcomes, including employment status and pain levels, were evaluated at 6 and 12 months post-discharge.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant improvements in employment rates were observed: 33 patients (42.3%) were employed at 6 months and 35 (44.9%) at 12 months (p < 0.001).
    • Patients completing over 4 weeks of the program showed higher success rates.
    • Employed patients reported reduced pain intensity, lower medication consumption, and decreased reliance on physician attention.

    Conclusions:

    • Comprehensive rehabilitation programs can effectively improve employment outcomes for individuals with chronic low back pain.
    • Program adherence, particularly duration, is associated with better functional recovery and return to work.
    • Successful rehabilitation leads to reduced pain and healthcare utilization among CLBP patients.
