The prune belly syndrome--a possible pathogenesis.

    Summary

Abdominal muscle deficiency and genitourinary issues may stem from venous infarction caused by abdominal over-distension. This occurs when the lower urinary tract is obstructed, leading to proximal dilatation.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Science
    • Pathology
    • Urology

    Background:

    • Anterior abdominal muscle deficiency and genitourinary abnormalities present a complex clinical picture.
    • Previous theories on pathogenesis have been proposed, primarily focusing on male patients.

    Observation:

    • Four recent cases were analyzed, including two males and two females.
    • All observed cases exhibited lower urinary tract obstruction with proximal dilatation.

    Findings:

    • A novel hypothesis suggests abdominal muscle atrophy results from venous infarction.
    • This infarction is proposed to be a consequence of significant abdominal over-distension.

    Implications:

    • This finding may reframe the understanding of the syndrome's etiology.
    • It highlights the potential role of venous compromise in abdominal wall development and function.
