    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Restorative Dentistry
    • Aesthetic Dentistry

    Background:

    • Numerous clinical indications exist for aesthetic tooth coverings, including stained teeth, developmental disorders like hypoplasia, and traumatic injuries.
    • The acid etch technique is a primary method for bonding composite resins and preformed veneers to enamel to address these aesthetic concerns.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review and compare four basic techniques for applying aesthetic tooth coverings using the acid etch method.
    • To discuss the materials, procedures, and expected outcomes of these veneer application techniques.

    Main Methods:

    • Four techniques were evaluated: freehand placement, use of a crown form, commercially performed laminates, and individually made preformed laminates.
    • Emphasis was placed on the meticulous acid etch technique, including phosphoric acid application duration and care at the gingival margin.
    • Comparison of working time, flexibility, aesthetics, and cost-effectiveness of each technique.

    Main Results:

    • Successful results are achievable with all four techniques after gaining experience.
    • Freehand placement is quick and flexible, while individually made preformed laminates offer superior contour and aesthetics but incur higher laboratory costs.
    • Light-cured composite resins are convenient for freehand placement; cold-cure resins require an unfilled resin primer.
    • Enamel veneers are expected to last 3-4 years, excluding incisal coverage, with ongoing research to improve durability.

    Conclusions:

    • Aesthetic tooth coverings can significantly improve patient self-esteem.
    • These restorations are currently considered medium-term treatments, and patient expectations should be managed accordingly.
    • Continued research aims to enhance the longevity and durability of dental veneers.
