Relationship between sperm concentration and the incidence of polyspermy in mouse embryos fertilized in vitro
Journal of Reproduction and Fertility
|January 1, 1978
Abstract:
A dose-response relationship between the incidence of polyspermy and sperm concentration was found by analysing chromosome preparations of first-cleavage mouse embryos derived from fertilizations in vitro with 3 concentrations of mouse spermatozoa (2 x 10(4), 2 x 10(6) and 1 x 10(7)/ml).
Insights
Higher sperm concentrations increase the likelihood of polyspermy in mouse embryo fertilization. This study found a direct dose-response relationship between sperm count and fertilization abnormalities.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Biology
- Developmental Biology
- Genetics
Background:
- Polyspermy, the fertilization of an egg by multiple sperm, can lead to developmental abnormalities.
- Understanding the factors influencing polyspermy is crucial for reproductive success and research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between sperm concentration and the incidence of polyspermy in mouse embryos.
- To establish a dose-response curve for sperm concentration and polyspermy.
Main Methods:
- In vitro fertilization of mouse oocytes using three distinct concentrations of mouse spermatozoa.
- Analysis of chromosome preparations from first-cleavage mouse embryos to identify polyspermy.
Main Results:
- A clear dose-response relationship was observed between sperm concentration and polyspermy incidence.
- Increased sperm concentrations (2 x 10^4, 2 x 10^6, and 1 x 10^7/ml) correlated with a higher rate of polyspermy.
Conclusions:
- Sperm concentration is a significant factor influencing polyspermy during in vitro fertilization.
- Controlling sperm concentration is essential for optimizing fertilization outcomes and preventing developmental errors in assisted reproduction.
