    Background:

    • Renal artery stenosis is a significant cause of secondary hypertension.
    • Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) is a potential treatment for renal artery stenosis.
    • Evaluating the efficacy and safety of PTRA in hypertensive patients is essential.

    Observation:

    • Twenty hypertensive patients with renal artery stenosis underwent renal angioplasty.
    • Immediate technical success was achieved in 18 patients.
    • Complications included insufficient dilatation and aortic wall injury during dissection.

    Findings:

    • A high success rate for hypertension management was observed, with 16 of 20 patients showing improvement (12 recovered, 4 marked improvement).
    • Two patients required repeat dilatation due to restenosis.
    • The overall treatment was effective in a majority of the cases.

    Implications:

    • Renal angioplasty is a viable and effective treatment for hypertension secondary to renal artery stenosis.
    • The procedure requires experienced interventionalists and a collaborative surgical team for optimal results and complication management.
    • Further research should focus on long-term outcomes and patient selection criteria for PTRA.
