    Summary

Prophylactic mezlocillin significantly reduced complications like infections and peritonitis in elective colon surgery patients. This antibiotic prophylaxis also shortened hospital stays without increasing bacterial resistance.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Postoperative infections are a significant concern in elective colon surgery.
    • Prophylactic antibiotics aim to reduce the incidence of surgical site infections and other complications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of prophylactic mezlocillin in reducing infectious complications after elective colon surgery.
    • To assess the impact of mezlocillin prophylaxis on postoperative hospital stay and bacterial resistance patterns.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective randomized controlled trial involving 100 patients undergoing elective colon surgery.
    • Patients received either 2g of intravenous mezlocillin preoperatively and every eight hours postoperatively, or placebo (control group).
    • Serum and tissue mezlocillin concentrations were measured, alongside postoperative bacterial cultures and clinical outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • The mezlocillin group showed a significantly lower incidence of intra-abdominal complications, peritonitis, urinary tract infections, and wound infections (10% vs. 46% in controls).
    • Average postoperative hospital stay was reduced from 23 days in controls to 19 days in the mezlocillin group.
    • No selection of resistant bacterial strains or adverse side-effects were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Prophylactic mezlocillin is effective in reducing infectious complications following elective colon surgery.
    • Mezlocillin prophylaxis can lead to shorter hospitalizations without promoting antibiotic resistance.
    • The study supports the use of mezlocillin as a safe and effective prophylactic agent in this surgical setting.
