    Summary

    In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), platelets are overstimulated and exhausted. The drug dipyridamole may help by reducing platelet activation and potentially lowering pulmonary hypertension.

    Background:

    • Activated platelets release vasoconstrictors implicated in pulmonary hypertension (PH) in hypoxemic patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
    • Platelet function in COPD patients requires further investigation to understand their role in PH.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate platelet production of malondialdehyde (MDA) and plasma beta-thromboglobulin (β-TG) levels in COPD patients.
    • To assess the effects of dipyridamole, a platelet-inhibiting drug, on platelet activation in these patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Assayed platelet MDA generation and plasma β-TG levels in 12 COPD patients.
    • Measurements were taken before and after short-term treatment with dipyridamole.

    • Noted an increase in plasma β-TG levels after dipyridamole treatment.
