    Summary

    Zomepirac sodium, a novel nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, caused acute renal failure in five patients. Prompt drug withdrawal or prednisone therapy led to recovery of kidney function.

    Background:

    • Zomepirac sodium is a newly developed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent (NSAIA) for managing mild to moderate pain.
    • The efficacy and safety profile of NSAIAs are crucial for patient care.

    Observation:

    • Five cases of acute renal failure were observed in patients with previously normal renal function.
    • These adverse events occurred following both short-term and long-term exposure to zomepirac sodium.

    Findings:

    • Patients presented with varying degrees of azotemia, proteinuria, and oliguria, indicative of kidney injury.
    • Discontinuation of zomepirac sodium therapy or initiation of prednisone treatment resulted in complete recovery for all affected individuals.

    Implications:

    • Zomepirac sodium carries a risk of nephrotoxicity, even in patients with no prior renal impairment.
    • Clinicians should monitor renal function in patients prescribed zomepirac sodium.
    • Alternative pain management strategies may be warranted for patients at risk of renal complications.
