    Background:

    • Chromium compounds are common occupational and environmental sensitizers.
    • Patch testing is a standard method for diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of chromium sensitivity in healthy volunteers and clinic patients.
    • To investigate the association between occupational chromium exposure and allergic reactions.
    • To identify risk factors for chromium allergy, such as hand eczema.

    Main Methods:

    • Patch testing with 0.5% potassium dichromate in petrolatum was performed on 822 healthy volunteers.
    • A 5-year retrospective analysis of 2981 clinic patients tested for chromate sensitivity was conducted.
    • Occupational history and presence of eczema were recorded for all participants.

    Main Results:

    • In healthy volunteers, 2% of men and 1.5% of women had positive patch tests.
    • Positive reactions were concentrated in offset printers (10/14), indicating occupational exposure risk.
    • Among clinic patients with occupational hand eczema, chromate sensitivity was significantly higher (20% in men, 8% in women).

    Conclusions:

    • Occupational exposure, particularly in the printing industry, significantly increases the risk of chromium allergy.
    • Hand eczema is a common symptom associated with chromium allergy.
    • Patch testing remains crucial for diagnosing chromium sensitivity in both general and occupational settings.
