    Background:

    • The nucleus basalis of Meynert (nbM) is the primary source of cholinergic input to the cerebral cortex.
    • Reduced cortical choline acetyltransferase (CAT) activity in Alzheimer's disease (AD) correlates with nbM neuron loss.
    • Huntington's disease (HD) does not exhibit a loss of cortical CAT activity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantitatively assess neuron counts in the nbM of Huntington's disease patients.
    • To compare cytologic changes in nbM neurons of HD patients with controls.
    • To investigate the relationship between nbM integrity and cortical CAT activity in different dementias.
