    Summary

    Anemia impairs the body's peripheral response to carbon dioxide (CO2) but not central response. Correcting anemia restores this vital CO2 responsiveness.

    Background:

    • To investigate the ventilatory response to carbon dioxide (CO2) in patients with severe anemia.
    • To differentiate the effects of anemia on central versus peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation.
    • To assess the reversibility of these effects upon anemia correction.

    • Assessed ventilatory response to CO2 in 15 anemic subjects.
