    Background:

    • Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure.
    • Immune system alterations are implicated in preeclampsia pathogenesis.
    • Previous studies have yielded conflicting results regarding immune cell counts in preeclampsia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify T-cell populations in patients with preeclampsia.
    • To compare T-cell levels in preeclampsia patients with those in normal pregnant women.
    • To investigate the relationship between T-cell reduction and disease severity.

    Main Methods:

    • Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from preeclampsia patients and healthy pregnant women.
    • Monoclonal anti-T-cell antibodies were used for cell enumeration.
    • Flow cytometry was employed to determine T-cell percentages and subtypes.

    Main Results:

    • A significant decrease in the percentage of total T cells was observed in preeclampsia patients compared to controls.
    • Both helper T cells and suppressor T cells were proportionally reduced, maintaining a normal helper to suppressor T-cell ratio.
    • No correlation was found between the extent of T-cell reduction and preeclampsia severity.

    • Preeclampsia is characterized by a reduced proportion of T cells in peripheral blood.
    • The findings support the hypothesis of diminished immune reactivity in preeclampsia.
